Við tekur útilokun með tilheyrandi pískrum og augnagotum - uns að því kemur að Einar Askell fer að efast um að hann sé ennþá hann sjálfur. En hann stenst prófið, heldur sínu striki og allt fer vel að lokum - nema hvað vinirnir fyrrverandi taka hann að vísu ekki í fulla sátt, það er svo gott að trúa illu upp á fólk... en það skiptir engu máli því að besta vinkonan, hún Milla, er undantekningin: „Þau mega trúa hverju sem þau vilja. Við ætlum að vera hinsegin." Abstract Waltzing with power: Queer politics and the social machine How should we depict the individual’s relation to society? Is he or she nothing but a cog in the machine, subject to the vicissitudes of biopower? Or is it pos- sible for him or her to resist social formation and be(come) genuinely queer in a subversive way, i.e. in a way that does not provide the machine with yet another means of subsistence? This article tries to cope with questions of this mould by reference to thinkers such as Marx, Hegel, Foucault, Derrida and Lacan. Marx’s definition of the human individual in terms of the creative manipulation of na- ture, i.e. work, is discussed in relation with the key concept of ahenation, leading to a cursory glance at interpretations of Hegehanism that promote the hypothesis of an (imminent or realized) end of history. Foucault’s analysis of the politics of sexuahty is discussed, as weh as his criticism of psychoanalysis, leading into an interpretation of Lacan’s definition of desire as “the desire of the other”. In conclusion, the article points towards a definition of the human being as the being that complicates desire, the being that resists its own relation to desire as the desire of the other. The im-possibihty of being true to one’s own desire thus comes down to the im-possibility of a sexual relationship - which, to be sure, has to be (re)invented every single time. 38 Gunnilla Bergström, Ertu svona, Einar Áskelt?
