or more parties or groups. But it
may be taken for granted that in
the years 1940—43 the socialdemo-
crats will increase their senatorial
strength considerably. They now
number 69, and the number for an
absolute majority is 76.
The budget reports which have
now been issued reflect the fa-
vourable conditions which applied
during the financial year 1937/38.
State revenue shows new records in
several respects. The total amount
of 1,309 mill. kr. was 109 mill. kr.
higher than the revenue estimates
in the budget proper and in the
supplementary budget.
This favourable result is in the
first instance due to the income tax.
Income and capital tax have given
a surplus of ca. 10 mill. kr., while
customs dues and liquor tax have
rendered about 15 mill. kr. more
than was estimated.
The expenditure proper for the
budget year 1937/38 balanced at
1,092 mill. kr., which corresponds
to an increase of ca. 135 mill. kr. in
comparison with the preceding
budget returns.
The Treasury Reserve Fund has
been augmented by 84.1 mill. kr.
from surplus revenue and also 9.4
mill. kr. from savings on expen-
diture, making a total of 93.5 mill.
kr. On the other hand the Reserve
Fund, which showed a net surplus
of 139.7 mill. kr. at the beginning
of the budget year, has been re-
duced by, among other items, writ-
ings off etc. on the budget proper
and the supplementary budget for
1937/38 to the extent of 58.1 mill.
kr. A further 56.4 mill. kr. has been
utilized for similar purposes in the
so-called transitional budget for the
same budget year. The final result
of these measures is that the Trea-
sury Reserve Fund shows a balance
of 118.7 mill. kr. at the close of the
budget year 1937/38. This amount
has now been transferred to the
Budget Equalisation Fund, which,
according to the new bookkeeping
principles which apply from the
present budget year, shall take the
place of the Treasury Reserve
Fund.
The trend of the foreign trade as
far as Sweden is concerned is shown
in the now published figures for the
first eight months of 1938.
Comparing this period with the
same period in 1937 there is a de-
crease in both exports and imports
this year, although the difference
is not very big. Exports for the
first eight months had a value
of Kr. 1,184,800,000, against Kr.
1,217,900,000 for the same period
in 1937 and Kr. 924,600,000 for
the same period in 1936. Imports
had a value of Kr. 1,302,100,000
for the first eight months this ycar,
against Kr. 1,355,200,000 and Kr.
1,005,000,000 respectively for the
same periods in 1937 and 1936. The
import surplus this year is thus Kr.
