Public Health in Iceland 1943. — A Summary.
1. In 1943 the climatic conditions were on íhe whole unfavourable.
The atmospheric pressure in the whole country was 1,8 mm below
the average. The mean tempcrature of the air was 0,6° above the
average. The rainfall was 15% above the average of the last 30 years.
During the summermonths the snnshine in Reykjavik was of some-
what longer but in Akureyri of a good deal shorter duration than
usually. Business and trade conditions were favourable. Unemplov-
ment was unknown, but prices continued to be alarmingly high.
2. Population, hirths and deaths. The population was on December
31st 1943: 125967 including Reykjavik 42815 (1942: 123996 and
40902). The marriage rate was 7,9 (8,7), the hirth rate 25,4 (24,5)
and the death rate 10,1 (10,5) per 1000 inhabitants. Infant mortalitii
wyas 30,3 (51,6) per 1000 born alive. The lowest death rate on record
is 9,7%0 (1939). The lowest infant mortality figure recorded is 28,3%0
(1938).
