Um höfundinn Agnar Ingólfsson (f. 1937) lauk B.Sc.-prófi frá Háskólanum í Aberdeen 1961 og doktorsprófi í fugla- og vistfræði frá Háskólanum í Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1967. Hann starfaði sem aðstoðarprófessor í líffræði, Southeastern Massachu- setts University (nú University of Massachusetts) 1967– 1970 og sem dósent í dýrafræði við Háskóla Íslands 1970–1973 og prófessor í vistfræði við sama skóla 1973– 2007. Frá 2007 hefur hann verið prófessor emerítus við Líf- fræðistofnun Háskólans. Agnar hefur unnið við rannsóknir á máfum hérlendis, en síðustu áratugi hefur megináherslan verið á vistfræði strandsvæða og þá einkum fjörunnar.
