5. Conclusions. When the Icelandic capelin reaches ma-
turity (13—19 cm long) it is 2—4 (5) years old. The
age at which maturity is reached, depends upon the sea-
temperature where the time of adolescence is spent, as
indicated by the number of vertebrae in the different age-
groups. Allthough a large mass of capelin is found dead
or dying when the spawning (first spawning) is over,
a considerable number survives. The Icelandic capelin is
a race with a high number of vertebrae (66) 69—70 (72),
and the number in the males exceeds that in the females,
allthough not largely. The Icelandic capelin is clearly
distinct from the capelin found off Vancouver Island. The
relative number of males at least on the spawning grounds,
amounts only to 1.4—3.4%.
