Lepidurus arcticus is most often found in
small lakes and ponds in the central high-
lands (Poulsen 1939) but records in sto-
machs of trout (Salmo trutta) and char (Salve-
linus alpinus) confirm its existence in large
and deep lakcs both in the central highlands
and in the lowlands. New records (Kristj-
ánsson pers. comrn.) include Lake Thing-
vallavatn and L. Apavatn, southern Iceland
and L. Eidisvatn on Langanes, NE. Iceland.
It has also been found in L. Laugarvatn, S.
Iceland (Mus. Nat. Hist., Reykjavik). L. arc-
ticus has not been found in small lakes and
ponds in the lowlands.
A metanauplius larva of L. arcticus is
reported from Iceland for the first time (Fig.
2). Food analyses from the stomachs of L.
arcticus from two localities in the central
highland (Table I) confirm the results of
Somme (1934) that the animal is detriti-
vorous. A large number of Cladocera frag-
ments in stomachs of L. arcticus from Lake
Mývatn, northern Iceland, (Table I) is
presumably because of exceptionally high
concentration of these fragments in the
sediment of Mývatn. Some of the clado-
cerans may, however, have been taken newly
dead or dying, and a small fraction may
have been takcn fully alive (most commonly
the chydorids Alona rectangula and Acroperus
harpae).
