English summary:
The publication of exegetical commentaries, written in Icelandic for an
Icelandic audience, is not a frequent occurence. In the year 1958, Sigurbjörn
Einarsson, then a well known Icelandic theologian, published a compre-
hensive commentary on the text of The Revelation of John. In addition
to shortly surveying the status quaestionis of a few important topics in the
scholarly discussion on Revelation, the present article analyses the motives
and nature of Einarsson’s interpretation and places it in the context of the
various conflicts - theological, political or otherwise - in the midst of which
he found himself at the time. The article argues that Einarsson’s interpreta-
tion of Revelation reflects an effort - deliberate or not - to support the
position he took in these conflicts which is a tendency well-known from
Revelation’s history of interpretation.
