Abstract:
This article discusses how religion and religious institutions, especially in
the West, have changed firom being in the center of the community to
being on the edge. This has happened through process of modernization.
Today mankind faces the greatest challenge that we have met in our
history, to maintain life on earth in its present form, despite the threats
of climate change, pollution and exploitation of the natural resources that
has accompanied the modernization and the modern industrialization.
Apocalyptic ideas have been a part of the Western religious life with a hope
of the salvation of mankind. At present, the end of the world, caused by
mankind seems to be a likely outcome. That scenario contains hopelessness
rather than hope.
The position of the Church and other religious institutions in the future
society is thought to be depending on whether their representatives manage
to show that the religious traditions are consistent with biological diversity,
sustainability and social justice or if they regard their role to protect the
existing world order based on unequal division of wealth and opportunity.
