In some copies this pula is combined with fragments of others, a
consequence of the faet that poems of this kind were so variable
in oral tradition that they, or parts of them, could be connected in
dif ferent ways. To illustrate this, text D is printed here unabridged
as the informant learnt it (see p. 62 above), but in the case of the
other copies irrelevant parts are omitted. DFS 67, p. 428 begins:
‘Gott er a5 riba sandana mjuka’ (cf. Olafur Davibsson’s edition, p.
227), then follows our pula (text B), then: ‘Karl for å skoginn’ (cf.
ib., p. 216), and finally: ‘Bar var karl og kerling’ (cf. ih., p. 215). The
same order is followed in DFS 67, p. 196. In Jon Olafsson’s Staf-
rofskver the pula begins: ‘Karl og kerling / ribu å alting’, and the
same is true of lB 605, 8vo (Olafur Davibsson’s edition, p. 215). In
JS 289, 8vo, our pula is given as the second half of one beginning:
‘Hvab gerbi gobib, gobib’ (the first half being another version of
one printed by Olafur Davibsson, pp. 179-80). In IB 605, 8vo, the
pula has a continuation beginning: ‘Drengurinn hann Dori’ (cf. ib.,
p. 217), and in Lbs. 2856, 4to it goes on: ‘Kerlinginn å Kjorseyri /
for hun heim i Bæ / meiddi sik å Hrutshorni / og vissi engin af /
nu eru nyar fréttir / nordanad’ and finishes with: ‘Karl for f skoginn’
(see above).
It may be mentioned here that in Lbs. 276, fol., p. 32 (written
between 1861 and 1868 by Påll Hjaltalin of Stykkisholmur (d.
1876), additions being made to the book up to 1871), the following
three lines are included in a pula beginning ‘Sat eg undir fiska-
hlaba fobur mins’ (cf. ib., pp. 181-5): ‘for eg fram umm eyar /
kysti margar meyar / og sjålfann keisaran’. This is added after:
‘hann varb mér ab miklum aub’.
The following lines from Grettisfærsla recur in the pula-texts
mentioned above:
