SIGuRðuR KRISTInSSOn 176 og Michael Oakshott,36 en líka nýlegar kenningar um „nýsköpunarháskól- ann“,37 „borgaralega háskólann“,38 „virka háskólann“,39 „alþjóðlega rann- sóknarháskólann“,40 „valdeflda háskólann“41 og svo mætti áfram telja. Chris Brink42 lýsir þessari deiglu í háskólaumræðu samtímans þannig að tekist sé á um „sál háskólans“, en Clark Kerr43 greindi nútímaháskóla eftirstríðsár- anna einmitt þannig að hann hefði margar sálir og væri því ekki eitt heldur margt. Áberandi þáttur í umræðu um háskóla á síðari tímum er að settar eru fram almennar lýsingar sem draga fram neikvæða eða ískyggilega þætti. Slíkar lýsingar eru ekki settar fram sem boðandi líkön heldur sem gagnrýni, einkum á það hvernig markaðsvæðing nýfrjálshyggjunnar hefur sett mark sitt á háskóla undanfarna áratugi og hvernig sú þróun grafi undan því gildi sem háskólastarf geti haft eða ætti að hafa.44 Annað dæmi um lýsingar sem 36 Michael Oakeshott, „The Idea of a university“, The Voice of Liberal Learning.
