Summary
This article recounts the history of the practice of confirmation in
Iceland. The author first discusses the attempt of Guðbrandur Þorláksson
(1571-1627), Bishop of Hólar, to re-introduce confirmation to Iceland in
the wake of the Reformation. The author then tums to the decree
conceming confirmation which took effect in Iceland in 1741 after
having first been put into effect in Denmark in 1736; he maintains that
the induction of this decree was one of the most wholesome events of the
18th century in Iceland. Twentieth-century developments are then
discussed, particularly the experimental curriculum for confirmation
courses which was adopted at the 1989 synod of the Church of Iceland.
Finally, the article summarizes the history of catechisms in Iceland, from
the publication in Icelandic (probably in 1562) of Luther's Small
catechism to the present.
