ENGLISH SUMMARY
Archaeological investigations were carried out on the island Papey, off the east coast of
Iceland, over the period 1967 to 1981. The island is mentioned in written records as one
of the places where remains allegedly belonging to the Irish monks, or papar, were found.
Papar are thought to have occupicd Iceland briefly bcfore the arrivai of the Norse in the
9th century.
Chapter 1. Topography and place-names on Papey.
The landscape on Papey, which is 2 km2 in size, and the surrounding islands is
characterized by rock outcrops, many of which are beehive-shaped. Between these are
wet bogs and grassland, well suited for grazing. Winters are mild and summers wet. The
main attractions of the islands have always been their rich bird-life, plentiful maritime re-
sources and drift-wood. A place-name map is illustrated on fig. 6, with the accompanying
list on pp. 53-68.
