ÞINGTÍÐINDI 123 Sölu þeirra hér vestra, var málinu og hon- um vísaS til útgáfunefndar þingsins. W. J. Hann benti á, aS þær frú DavíS östlund og ungfrú Helga Agnes SigurSsson frá New York kæmu báSar til aS taka þátt I henni og auk þess mundi Dr. A. H. Gillson forseti háskólans hafa mikilsvarSandi yfirlýsingu fram aS bera, sem aS snerti alla íslendinga. Skýrsla áhrærandi myndastyttu Leifs Eirlkssonar frá nefndlnni sem þaS mál hefir meS höndum las G. L. Jóhannsson. Members of the Leií Eiriksson Memorial Committee Gentlemen: I am sorry to have to report that another year has passed without any suc- cessful results in this matter. Senator Miiton C. Young had the bill to locate the statue in Washington reintroduced in the Senate during the last session of Congress. Now the Fine Arts Commission insists that a $40.000.00 appropriation for the building of the base and preparation Of the site is necessary. Senator Young reports that unless we can make some contribution to that it will be difficult to obtain passage of the bill with that áppropriation. He suggested that if we could raise $8000.00 or even $5000.00 it tvould be easier to get favorable action. t told him I doubted if we could under- take that but that I would submit it to the Committee and the convention of the Icelandic National League. I enclose a copy of a letter from Frede- rick F. Hill, director af the Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, Va., where the statue is now located. He also sent more Photographs along the lines of the pic- tures sent you last year which I am sending to Mr. Asmundur Johannsson that he may exhibit them at the convention. ■ápparently the statue is well taken care of and viewed by many people. Now I wish you would give some con- sideration as to how to proceed. Do you know of any influential Democrat whose help we can enlist? Shall we try to raise s°me funds? Should we consider another location ? Please let me hear from you as to what you think best to do. Kindest personal regards. Sincerely, G. GRIMSON Einnig las hr. G. L. Jóhannsson afrit af bréfi svohljóöandi, frá umsjónarmanni minjasafnsins þar sem myndastyttan nú er, til Guömundar dómara Grfmssonar: Tlie Mariners, Museum, Newport Neivs, Virginia. January 26, 1951 The Honorable G. Grimson, Justice of Supreme Court State of North Dakota Bismarck, N. Dak. Dear Sir: Enclosed are three photographs of American and British naval groups with the Leif Eriksson monument as a back- ground. These pictures are but two of the many groups taken by our Museum photo- grapher. A large number of other parties including many student tours and ships’ crews take pictures in a similar manner. Since 1930, when The Museum was founded, the motto is . . Devoted To The Culture Of the Sea And Its Tribu- taries, Its Conquest By Man And Its In- fluence On Civilization." This motto ap- pears on our bronze Main Entrance doors as shown in the enclosed photograph. A Viking long-boat may be seen in the upper panel, second from the left. Models are also featured in our collections. More than 150.000 visitors from all parts of the world visit here during the year. We believe the above information with our previous photographs will assure your Committee of the prominence and distinc- tion of the Eiriksson monument. We wish to thank you for your inquiries. Respectfully yours, FREDERICK F. HILL, Director G. L. Jðhannsson lagöi til og Jón M. ólason studdi, aÖ skýrslunni og afriti bréfs Mr. Frederick F.
