programme had reached the majority of
primary-level classes.
The reactions in Iceland were similar to
those in other countries, implementation
of New Math at the primary level proved
to be the beginning of the end. However,
the article recounts interviews with four
individuals preparing at that time for their
entrance examination for high schools.
They all remember that they enjoyed Arn-
laugsson’s lower secondary level New
Math textbook and his television shows.
All of them became employed where their
mathematical training was important, a
precious gain in a small society where the
number of university educated mathema-
ticians only increased from one to two in
the second quarter of the 20th century.
