Abstract
The topic of the present article is Psalm 55, a very typical individual lament,
apart from the fact that the enemy referred to in the psalm has previously
been a close friend (a loved one) of the psalmist. To a considerable degree,
the article’s author makes use of the film The Wings ofthe Dove as a point of
view in his discussion, which is in harmony with his exegetical approach to
include the history of effect when interpreting the biblical texts. It appears
that Psalm 55 and the film are linked in a variety of ways - the film’s title,
for instance, comes from the psalm. These links bring out the question as
to whether the psalm may reflect the experience of a woman who has been
betrayed by a beloved friend, as is the case in the film. These considerations
bring the author to the field of feminist exegesis where such an exposition
has recently been articulated. The author discusses several arguments for
such a frnding and comes to the conclusion that it is altogether possible
but not inevitable. At the same time, he lays stress on the self-contained
value of the history of effects, which does not rest on its usefulness for the
historical-critical interpretation of the ancient texts.
