Ekki væri ólíklegt að hann hefði flutt sögu sína klausturbræðrum sem Ólafs saga helga hefði verið flestum bókum kunnari og kærari og hefðu þegið fegins hendi — og án hótfyndni -— söguna af skáldi og kappa hins helga konungs. Þeir hefðu metið meira skemmtun og sálubót en smásmugula heimildagagnrýni og samanburð. Varla ætti að vera efamál að hvað svo sem höfundur Fósthræðra sögu þekkti af rituðum frásögnum og munnmælum af Þormóði skáldi hafi hann talið sér heimilt hvort sem var að hafna þeim eða auka við og endurbæta, — að hann hafi notað sér fyrirmyndir til að setja saman söguatriði eða bæta um gömul. Þegar kom að hinzta degi söguhetjunnar -— kappa hins helga Ólafs konungs -— átti við að leita hinnar veglegustu fyrirmyndar — þeirrar sömu sem frásagn- irnar af lífláti Ólafs konungs höfðu mótazt eftir frá upphafi: sög- unnar af því er sjálfur skaparinn fór af veröldinni. Vélskólanum í Reykjavík. SUMMARY This article deals with some questions conceming the different sagas of S. Ólafr and their relationship to the Fóstbræðra Saga (:= Fbr.). The present au- thor maintains that the author of Fbr. must have been very well acquainted with the contents of some saga of S. Ólafr and that it must have been clear to him that the traditions concerning the last day of S. Ólafr had been greatly in- fluenced by the gospel narratives of the Passion of Christ. Two cpisodes in the last chapter of the Fbr., relating the death of King Ólafr and of Þormóðr, the poet, are obviously influenced by episodes in the Passion. First, there is the conversation between Þormóðr and the king on the day of their death, when Þormóðr asks the king to promise him tliat they will hoth go to the same night quarters. King Ólafr answers that if it is in his power “you will go there to- night where I go” (see ref. in n. 9). Clearly, Þormóðr is likc the evil-doer hanging on the cross by the side of Christ spcaking about life and death, and the king’s reply is comparahle to that of Christ (see ref. in n. 10). Second, there is the conversation of Þormóðr and the woman by the fire in the barn after the battle. The woman asks whether he belongs to the king’s men or to the
