Linguistic and textual features
37*
‘hlaða’ 41.102, ‘hlaðin’ 46.19, ‘hliop’ 45.54, ‘hraklig’ 41.20, ‘hrifo’ 41.42,
‘hringr’ 41.93 (all).
Before classical OI d <1) is usually double ‘helldr’ 41.29 - ‘villdi’ 47.10
(x 18) but single <1> appears in ‘hðld[ig]’ 41.43, ‘kveldit’ 41.72, 76 (ct
‘kvelldit’ 41.67), ‘ieldi’ 41.94, 104, 105, ‘vildi’ 41.106, 45.47 (ct ‘villdi’
41.50, 75, 47.10, 12), ‘seld’ 45.50.
<lð), <lþ), <nð), <nþ> do not occur (and there are no examples of Id < Ið or
nd < nð), but <mð> survives in ‘styrmðv’ 45.14.
-mn- not dissimilated to -fn‘samnaðe’ 45.34, ‘sðmnvzvð’ 45.66,
‘sa/mnvðvz’ 45.69; original -fn- remains: ‘iafn’ 41.6, ‘hefna’ 45.38, ‘Rafn’
45.66, 68.
-pt- written ‘ft’ in ‘sveift’ 41.115, probably ‘svi[f]ti’ 41.31, otherwise
<pt> ‘ept/r’ 41.4 - ‘aptr’ 45.58 - ‘ept/V’ 47.7 (x 30 including ‘eptir' x 23).
In ‘af braglig/r’ 41.19, ð is lost between g and /.
The scribe appears to have experienced a curious confusion between ð
and z; ‘r]æ[ði]ð’ 41.30 (réðiz), ‘sömnvzvð’ 45.66 (sgmnuðuz), ‘spvrziðz’
47.6 (spurðiz); and sometimes with combinations of s and another
consonant: ‘allkvrsteisligi[r]’ 41.22 (-kurteis-), ‘kvrsteis’ 41.39 (kurteis),
‘ikottnað’ 41.93 (íkostnað), ‘þyngl’ 41.98 (þyngsl).
Lenition of consonants occurs occasionally: ek solely with <k> (x 37),
mik solely with <k> (x l),þik: ‘þig’ 41.89, 90, alongside ‘þik’ 41.39, 41.78;
at: ‘at’ (x 127); hvat: ‘hvat’ 47.3 (sole); þat: ‘þat’ 41.85, 45.51 (all); ‘að’,
‘hvað’, ‘það’ do not occur, it: ‘iþ’ 46.21, ‘it’ does not occur, sét: ‘seð’ twice
41.37,46.11.
Consonants in unstressed syllables -at: ‘at’ in ‘þv/at’ 41.9 - ‘nackvat’
47.5 (x 6), ‘að’ in ‘kallað’ 41.63 - ‘flotað’ 45.23 (x 4), -it: ‘it’ in ‘tekit’
41.4 - ‘v/rkit’ 46.19 (x 43), ‘ið’ in Titið’ 41.27 - ‘setið’ 46.9 (x 8).
3. MORPHOLOGY
Nominal forms The potential medial vowel in the suffixed article of ‘fðrna’
45.37 is not present. The name Gizurr has nom. ‘Gízvr’ 41.1. There is not
sufficient evidence to judge the scribe’s practice, as this is the only occur-
rence of this name. Styrr has nom. ‘StyR’ 41.5. Again, because of shortage
of evidence, the scribe’s practice cannot be determined. There are,
however, no unorthodox forms here, nor are there other relevant noun
forms in E.
Adjectival and adverbial forms In classical OI, the superlative exponent
is written with ‘st’ both word-finally and word-medially, except when
following a dental consonant (d, t), in which cases dental + s is written with
‘z’: bezt(i), helzt(i). The dental may be latent (after ll/nn): ellzt(i),
