back rounded vowel, but ‘toko’ 51.64.
In medial position the back rounded vowel appears as (o> in ‘kaullodu’
51.35, and as (ö> in ‘hundrðduw’ 51.15.
Consonants As in Hand ii single consonants are sometimes found where
double are normal ‘han’ 50.3, ‘biugu’ 52.12, ‘Þorodr’ 52.27.
(c) occurs only in the combination (ck) ‘feck’ 51.7 - ‘ecki’ 52.43 (x 20)
and, once, in ‘oc’ 51.34.
h: there are no cases of the absence of (h> before a consonant.
Pronouns do not show lenition of final k ‘ek’ 51.45 - 51.59 (x 8), cf
‘miðk’ 51.8, 21,41 (all).
A nasal is lost in ‘Uazfirdingar’ 52.27.
As in Hand ii shortening of rr appears to have taken place after a stressed
vowel: ‘stéri’ 51.32, 52.3, ‘huer’/‘hucr’ 51.44, 57, 59 (all nom. masc.),
‘byr’ (nom.) 51.52. With one exception (‘Snorri’ 53.7) Snorr-i/a is always
with one (r> (x 16, cf Hand ii). See also Morphology.
(t> is usual in at (x 58), variants ‘ath’ 51.17, 52.37 (all). þat occurs in full
‘Þat’ 51.4 - 52.9 (x 6), ‘þath' at 51.37 (sole); the (th) forms are at line-
ends. hvat is ‘huat’ 51.43 (sole).
(z> is used after t and d ‘Loptz’ 51.3, ‘ Jslandz’ 51.6, but can also by itself
represent ds/ðs/ts, as ‘lanz’ 51.35, ‘islennzkir’ 51.27, ‘Armoz’ 52.15,
‘Siguaz’ 52.42. It is used after // and nn, as ‘fellz’ 52.34, ‘Þorfinz’ 51.2. For

Consonants in unstressed syllables (ad) is regular for OI -at (x 6), (at> is
absent. As in Hand ii (it> is more frequent for OI -it than (id> (19:3). (ud>
occurs twice for OI -ut ‘nðckud’ 51.35, 39; the inverse spelling ‘þer
mundut’ occurs at 51.47.
Compared with Hand ii (r> is more frequent than the svarabhakti form
(ur). The latter, apart from ‘madur’ 51.27, 59, ‘gaufgaztur’ 52.16, ‘sialfur’
52.39, ‘gmdur’ 52.40, ‘alldurs’ 53.20, is confined to the names ‘Gvdleifur’
51.43, ‘Osuifurs’ 52.6, ‘Þordur’ 52.32, ‘Eyiolfur’ 52.33, ‘Kleppur’ 53.15
(all). Inverse spellings occur ‘aun/tr’ 51.67, ‘födr brodr’ 52.44, 53.11.
3. MORPHOLOGY
Nominal forms Þuríðr "ÞuridV’ 52.19, ‘Þur/dr’ 53.6 (both nom.).
As with Hand ii, the old distinction between -rr and -r in nom. and acc.
sing. is observed to some degree: Kárr ‘Kárr’ 50.2 (nom.), but ‘Kár’ (non-
nominative) 50.3; knQrr ‘knörr’ 51.3 (acc.); ‘Styr’ 53.15 (acc., sole) ct
‘byr’ (nom.) 51.52, ‘huer’/’huer’ 51.44, 57, 59 (all nom. masc.).
