M (AM 445 b 4to) - Hand i
ct ‘skildu’ (classical 01 skilðu, from skilja) 5.2. nn may be expressed by the
inverse spelling <rn>: ‘seirna’ 4.13, ‘Hall[st]eirn’ 17.21, 63 (all); pronun-
ciation of the two combinations had fallen together after 01 long vowels.
Traditional pt is usually written <ft> ‘eft/r’ 4.3 - ‘giftir’ 26.11 (x 48), but
‘ept/'r’ 17.36 - Topt’ 25.15 (x 9). Ligatured double <v>, or <w>, thrice
occurs - twice consonantally ‘wo’ 17.78, ‘wodi’ 17.113 (verse), and once
where <w> = vu ‘wrdv’ 25.48 (c/ below, p. 85). Initial <v> once occurs
doubled but not ligatured ‘vvog’ 4.17.
There is some confusion between -r and -rr, as witnessed by the inverse
spellings ‘snyrr’ 17.61, ‘haarr’ 17.96, ‘nærr’ 4.17, 17.114 (all) and ‘Maarr’
25.52 (nom., sole), but in most cases the traditional spelling prevails, e g
‘saarr’ (nom. masc.) 17.80, but ‘s]aar’ (nom. fem.) 17.58, ‘Ek ber’ 17.222,
but third person ‘ferr’ 17.97, 25.41, 42, ‘spyrr’ 17.143. For final rr see also
under ‘Nominal forms’ in Morphology.
Lenition of consonants in independent words hardly appears. Pronouns
traditionally ending in k retain that spelling: ‘ek’ 17.44 - 26.12 (x 34) ‘mik’
17.100 - 25.39 (x 7), ‘sik’ 17.211 (sole), ‘þik’ 17.38 - 26.11 (x 5) (ct the
suffixed first person nom. sing. at the end of the verse-line ‘ef ek nidbrædi
nædag’ 17.133). mjgk is spelt only with <k>, thrice: 4.15, 17.7, 25.38; ok is
spelt ‘Ok’ 4.6-26.19 (x 11), and ‘ok’ 7.6 (sole).
Whereas ‘at’ occurs 116 times, ‘ad’ is absent; ‘ath’ appears once at
17.13, where, moreover, the letters are stretched out to fill the line. ‘hid’ for
hit occurs thrice: 6.4, 17.84, 17.191. <at> in hvat occurs 4 times unabbre-
viated: 17.42, 46, 153, 224; ‘huad’ is absent. þat when unabbreviated is
spelt ‘þat’ 17.28, 37 (all). tt is written <dt> in the participle ‘kuadt’ 17.32,
probably influenced by past sing. of the verb.
Consonants in unstressed syllables For -at the scribe always uses <ad>,
‘skipad’ 4.29 - Teitad’ 26.21 (x 10). For -it he writes <id>, ‘hofid’ 4.6 -
‘[Rav]nlitid’ 26.19 (x 48). As regards -ut, there are five occurrences of
‘nockvd’ 17.31 - 26.20, none of <vt> in this word.
The scribe consistently writes <r> rather than <ur>, ‘<Þ>orolfr’ 4.1 - ‘vidr’
26.8 (x ca 135). Exceptions, where the svarabhakti vowel is expressed:
‘svdvr’ 17.8, ‘vitvr’ 17.129 (verse) (all). Final -is is written <-iss>,
‘önduegiss’ 4.10- ‘erfidiss’ 25.30 (x 6) as well as <-s> (twice): ‘hcrsis’ 8.3,
‘auglis’ 26.66.
