Linguistic and textual features
59*
32.32 - ‘nykefld’ 38.100 (x 11). Before original ð, however, / is spelt (1)
‘skildu’ 22.19 - ‘þoldu’ 26.79 - ‘ualdi’ 32.64 - ‘huldu’ 32.123 - ‘taldi’
34.53 - ‘uoldu’ 35.72 - ‘skilduz’ 49.50 (x 21). Past of skilja ‘skildi’ e g
34.49, 36.32, thus contrasts with past of skulu ‘skylldi’ e g 19.2, 37.15.
Exceptionally, only a single (1) appears in ‘uinsældir’ 24.7733 and in
‘Selteyrar’ (error for ‘Salt-’) 21.30 (all). In the case of mæla “speak” (<
*maþlian) the <1> occurs doubled ‘mællt-’ 24.15 - 47.62 (x 7), ct ‘mæltiz’
29.39.
OI ð has become t after k ‘uakti’ 24.56. Both ‘ræntu’ 46.19 and ‘rændu’
46.14 occur; ‘rændu’ is an early example of nd in this word, which is the
only possible form in later Icelandic; also ‘a mælldi’ 45.52 (“blamed”),
perhaps a slip of the pen.34
s + b is written <sp) in ‘Aspirnlingí7r’ 50.26.
Between two n's d is lost in ‘lannyrðing’ 40.55, as also between n and /
in ‘Uinlondz’ (of Vindland) 27.78; cf, however, the same form used of
Vínland ‘Uinlandz’ 43.4, ‘Uinlandi’ 43.5.
gs and gt may be written <ks>, <kt>: ‘Aurlyks’ 30.2, 5, 6 (all), ct
‘Aurlygs’ 30.1 (twice) - 48.3 (x 12), ‘uikt’ (= vígt) 25.56, ‘snuðikt’ 40.31,
‘kunnikt’ 50.5 (all); often in the suffix -lig- ‘sæmilikt’ 24.57 - ‘liklikt’
42.27 (x 9), also ‘gé’/'filikzti’ 29.18 (ct ‘skauruligzta’ 21.39, ‘sæmiligstu’
30.31); g is lost before k in ‘biarkuiðar’ 29.43, but ct ‘biargkuidinum’ two
lines later; ‘uikinkr’ 45.107 may be a spelling error.
Metathesis of /7 is found once in ‘alfs’ 35.16, ct ‘afls’ 31.38, 32.44.
Idl becomes // in ‘auðuelliga’ (= auðveldliga) 26.45.
Once, <gn> is written for ng ‘tegnda’ 32.60, ct ‘tengda’ 39.13, ‘tengdir'-
50.9.
n is lost between 1 and s ‘Suinauatz’ 21.29, ‘Uatz-’ 35.98, 44.10, 46.9,
50.23, ‘bottz’ 46.13 (all). Partial dissimilation of two nasals appears in
‘sofnuduz’ 45.109, ct ‘samnaði’ 45.64.
Once, <fs> appears for ps ‘skifs’ 41.18, ct ‘skips’ 40.53. <pt> is com-
moner than <ft), as ‘aptr’ 19.1 - ‘eptir' 50.29 (x ca 370), but ct ‘eftir' x 5,
‘loft-’ 25.15 (but ‘lopt’ 25.14, 18), ‘heftaz’ 35.63, ‘aftr’ 38.49, ‘aftan’
45.44, ‘Alfta-’ 39.23, 24 (but ‘Alpt(a)-’ x 27). sfr may be expressed <spr) in
‘huspr-’ 27.30 - 50.35 (x 5)’ ct ‘husfr-’ 19.12 - 49.55 (x 12).
Simplification of -rr after a long vowel is indicated by inverse spellings
where <rr>/<R> is written for OI r, as ‘mááR’ 22.9, 22.16, ‘haarr’ 32.110,
‘apalgráR’ 48.42. See, further, Morphology (Nominal forms) for variation
w C/Celander 1906. pp. 8-12.
14 Bandle 1956, p. 414, gives examples of ‘mælti’ for mældi (from mæla “measure” < *malian),
but not vice versa.
