For the labial mutation of fractured e (OI jg) <iö) is the commoner
spelling ‘fiördv’ 4.9 - ‘giðll' 17.179 - ‘fiðrraada’ 25.46 (x 14, of which 7
are forms of bjgrn)-, <io) is also used ‘miok’ 4.15 - ‘Þorbiorn’ 24.34 -
‘fiolmcntv’ 25.47 (x 6); four examples of ‘siolf-’ (see below, p. 86*) are
disregarded.
Specific vowel combinations There are no cases of eg written <eig>.
eng is almost always <eing), ‘eingi’ 4.35 - ‘geingi’ 4.36 - ‘leingr’ 17.47
- ‘eingi’ 26.7 (x 6); ‘geng-’ occurs thrice but the abbreviation expansion
cannot be certain. The preterite forms ‘Gengv’ 17.141 and ‘fiengv’ 17.94
suggest that the vowel in these forms was é rather than e, c/EdAM ser. B,
vol. 29, p. cxciii.
vá is spelt with either aoro forms; <vaa> survives in ‘vaanu’ 4.13, ‘vaan’
17.147 (verse) (all), but <uo)/<vo)/<uö)/<vð> forms predominate ‘vvog’
4.17 - ‘vög' 4.21 - ‘vo’ 17.49 - ‘vðpn’ 17.179 (verse, apparently sing.) -
‘[v]on’ 25.23 (x 18). ‘suo’/‘svo’ occurs 4.11 - 26.9 (x 17); svá does not
occur with a forms. ‘huort’/‘hvort’ 4.1 - 26.21 (x 7); hvárr does not occur
with a forms.
Vowels in unstressed syllables The front vowel in a final syllable is <i)
‘blóóti’ 4.1 - ‘mcc/lti’ 26.20 (x ca 390); <e> appears once ‘sagde’ 17.225. In
final position the corresponding back, round vowel is usually <u)/<v)
‘myklv’ 4.1 - ‘sinv’ 26.18 (x 149) but <o> also occurs ‘[ö]dro’ 4.43,
‘Kavtlo’ 17.75, ‘veizlor’ 4.33, ‘havgom’ 17.14; where the stressed vowel is
o, q or ó and is followed by a single consonant, the final vowel is usually
<o) ‘komo’ 17.69 - 25.4 (x 6), ‘kono’ 17.57, 24.18 (all), ‘sono’ 8.2 (sole),'
‘toko’ 6.2, 17.18, 92 (all). The sole exception is ‘stodv’ 4.23. ‘f°’ 17.25 -
17.190 (x 4) and ‘v°’ 17.19 - 17.220 (x 11) have been expanded on the
analogy of ‘komo’, ‘toko’. In a medial syllable, usually either <o> or <ð> is
found ‘skipðrvm’ 4.21, ‘kavnnödv’ 4.18, ‘Nðckðrvm’ 6.6, ‘[n]ockora’
17.32, ‘ætlodv’ 17.91, ‘lidueizlona’ 17.222, but ‘gödvnvm’ 4.30, ‘vopn-

Consonants <c> occurs only before <k>. For the labial fricative between
voiced sounds <f> and <fu)/<fv> occur almost equally, <f> ‘ofan’ 4.5 -
‘horfid’ 26.1 (x 18), <fu>/<fv> ‘hofvinv’ 4.10 - ‘gefvid’ 25.35 (x 22).
Instances include contrasting pairs ‘hefir’ 17.117 and ‘hefvir’ 17.96,
‘Mæfa’ 17.124 and ‘Maafva’ 17.26; inf. hafa and yfir always have <fv>, as
has sjálf-. Palatalization of g is indicated before <ð> (representing ö < 0) 4
times ‘giörla’ 17.148 - ‘giört’ 26.10, and before æ twice ‘giætir’ 17.212,
‘aagietazta’ 26.16; similarly ‘kierleik[vm]’ 24.29; no other case of possible
palatalization of k arises.
There are no cases of loss of h before a consonant. <1> followed by
classical OI d is double ‘skylldi’ 4.2 - ‘helldr’ 26.4 - ‘skylldi’ 26.5 (x 53);
