5. ERRORS AND UNIQUE READINGS
A number of errors and omissions are indicated by angle brackets and
asterisks. They are more frequent than with other scribes; for example a
negative was evidently omitted at 38.64. On occasion the scribe added
omitted material in the margins. He also noted, at the foot of f. 8ra, that the
name given as ‘Þorbergr’ should have been ‘Bergþor(r)’. (This transpo-
sition is repeated several times; the same error occurs once in W.) His
spelling of Þórgunna’s name is erratic until her narrative is well under way.
Other probable errors are ‘yrdr’ (= yðr) 38.62, ‘kona . . . svdr eysks’ 42.15,
‘huguz’ (= hugðiz) 42.25. At 42.160 the word urðarmáni, correct in the
following line (MS ‘vrdar m.’), has been miswritten ‘fvrdvr manna'. Twice
<h) is written for <þ>, 42.136, 191. The expression ‘bvn/'r betr erv vær’
45.31 seems somewhat idiosyncratic, though not impossible; ‘erv’ may
perhaps be an error for ‘en’? See the textual notes for further examples of
errors.
Forms of hgfuðit lack the first dental consonant in ‘havfv<t)/í’ 38.77, 80,
42.191, ‘hafv<t>/7’ 38.79, ‘hafu<t>/7’ 38.82, ‘ha]ufv<t>[/?]’ 45.4. While these
might be explained as haplography, it is surprising that the same (or a
similar) slip should be made six times.
The phrasing ‘hreg oc rota’ at 42.122 is unique to M (‘uindr ok regn’ W,
‘hregg og allmikit Regn’ *A, ‘hregg og vedz/r’ H).
