M (AM 445 b 4to) - Hand iii
ct ‘vopn’ 38.45, ‘hvar’/‘huar-’ x 9 ct ‘hvor-’ x 3; ‘fvwdi uarvm’ 41.43 ct
‘fv/rdr vor’ 41.50, ‘vor(ir) menn’ 45.34, also ‘va’ 40.12, but ‘von’ 41.21,
‘uos’ 42.28, ‘suofv’ 42.145, ‘*þvott’ 42.191. Twice (ö) (which is not used
for labially mutated a or for o) is used after v ‘vöpn-’ 38.7, 9. (vó) is used
in ‘vóducrk’ 42.41. The past plur. indic. of vera (earlier vqi~u) occurs once
as ‘vorv’ 47.13 and is so expanded.
y + consonant(s) + i: fyrir does not occur unabbreviated but it has been
expanded ‘íirir’ (x 47) by analogy with yfir, which is always ‘if/r’ 38.41 -
47.2 (x 16); ‘skilldi’ 38.60, 61,47.19, ‘skilldu’ 45.81 (past of skulu).
Vowels in unstressed syllables For the front unrounded vowel i is
universal finally, and also in the position before final r except for three
occurrences ‘heyanner’ 41.10, ‘sarer’ 41.17, ‘v[ar]er’ 45.24. Consequently
‘ir’ is used in expansions, except in ‘Gizer’ 41.16, 42.1, where the vowel in
the second syllable is an earlier 0, cf the normal form Gizurr. (e> appears
exceptionally in ‘auxe/mi’ 45.55.
For the back rounded final vowel (u> is usual, but (o> appears in ‘hvx-
freyio’ 42.17.
Consonants There is much fluctuation between doubled and single
consonants, as ‘aldri’ 42.69, ‘alldri’ (same line), ‘eki’ 38.30, ‘ekki’ 38.80,
‘sotu’ 38.9, ‘sottu’ 38.10, ‘þotiz’ 41.4, ‘þotti’ 41.6; cf also ‘fótlegsins’
38.67, ‘skerssins’ 38.1. Admittedly, superscript dots are often hard to make
out.
(c) occurs in ‘oc’ regularly 38.1 - 48.4 (x ca 370) and in ‘fiolskrvdic’
42.25 (perhaps anticipation of following ‘oc’) (all).
(z) is used, in preference to (s>, after t, d, e g ‘atzins’ 38.73, ‘nautz’
42.58, ‘Þorbrandz’ passim, ‘Þorodz’ 38.77, ‘sucrdz’ 38.35. In ‘skarz’
42.18 (z) represents ts, in ‘anzælis’ 42.158 and ‘Ingiallz’ 48.2 it represents
ds (ct ‘Ingialldz’ earlier in the same line), but (dz) is written in ‘tidzka’
42.151. (z) is also used after // and nn, e g ‘allz’ 42.59, ‘mannz’ 38.56; for
(z> in superlative and medio-passive forms, see Morphology.
Final k in pronouns is written (k) rather than (g), when spelt out ‘ek’
38.13 - 45.51 (x 56), ‘sik’ 41.54 - 47.29 (x 4); þik does not occur un-
abbreviated.
Before classical OI d (1) is double, ‘villdi’ 38.17 - ‘skilldi’ 47.19 -
‘Ingialldz’ 48.2 (x ca 70), except in the interconsonantal case ‘kefld’ 38.73
(‘aldri’ 42.69 is probably accidental, ct ‘alldri’ in the same line). Before
classical OI ð (1) is single ‘skildvm’ 38.15, ‘tald/r’ 38.27, ‘valduz’ 40.3,
‘otald/r’ 40.14, ‘skilduz’ 41.53 (all). Before t (1) is double ‘allt’ 38.52 -
‘illt’ 47.20 (x 29) except ‘hVoltvnvm’ 38.13 (sole).
Interconsonantal n is lost in ‘giarsamliga’ (for gjarn-) 42.138, and ‘Vaz-
ness’ (for Vatnsness) 47.3.
