1960). <1) is also doubled before t: ‘allt’ 3.11, 27.4, ‘alltt’ 27.24, ‘skalltu’
26.22, ‘skallt’ 48.9, ‘uilltu’ 26.36, ‘m[é]llt[u’ 26.53, ‘méllt’ 26.70, ‘sigllt’
27.2, 8.
<q)occurs in ‘q(uad)’ 1.15, ‘quad’ 26.63, 85, ‘qi/(3d’ 26.54, 49.11, ‘qwelld-
it’ 26.72, 49.5, ‘que[diu]’ 48.17 (all).
r is lost before s in ‘fyst’ 2.2; ‘sidarsta’ 26.51 is probably analogical
rather than an inverse spelling.
Simplification of rr appears to have taken place after a stressed vowel:
‘huer’ (masc. nom.) 49.7, ‘uara’ (gen. plur.) 26.42, ‘oro^íor’ 1.17. Snorr-i/a
is written with single <r) 12 times, ‘Snorri’ twice; but with unabbreviated
<rr) not at all. ‘ger' (masc. nom.) 26.79 is so expanded. For final rr see also
under ‘Nominal forms’ in Morphology.
Lenition of t appears in ‘uid’ (= vit) 26.31, 48.10; hvat appears as ‘huath’
26.36 (line-beginning) and ‘huad’ 26.68 (sole). The word transcribed
‘huúfd’ 26.33 is ambiguous; apparently <hu> is followed by superscript <t>
and then <d>, at a line-end; ‘huat’ does not occur. For the particle, ‘at’ is the
usual spelling (x 65), ‘ad’ occurring 26.40 (sole) and ‘ath’ 48.10, 49.20
(line-ends); ‘þat’ is the only full form of OI þat, 26.35 - 49.28 (x 15).
<z> is used, in preference to <s>, after t, d, e g ‘uitz’ 1.5, ‘nautz’ 26.78,
‘skattzi[ns’ 27.6, 7, ‘-landz’ 27.3, 14, 17, ‘Þorodz’ 27.30; <z> is also used
for dental + s: Tanz’ 3.13, 48.13, ‘Jngiallz’ (twice) 1.24, ‘ellz’ 26.67,
ímannz’ 1.27, ‘fellz’ 49.4, and after <11> in 'Jarllz’ 27.12. After ð, on the
other hand, the masc. gen. ending is <s> ‘rads’ 26.27, ‘herads’ 26.100,
27.29. C/superlatives under ‘Adjectival forms’ in Morphology.
Unstressed syllables There are more occurrences of <it> than <id> for OI
-it (x 27:11); <ad> occurs 6 times, <at> not at all; <ut> and <ud> appear once
each ‘nockut’ 26.37, ‘nockud’ 26.30.
Final -r/-ur: <ur> is more common (x 35:57) and ‘ur’ has been used when
suspensions are expanded.
3. MORPHOLOGY
Nominal forms The name Þuríðr appears as ‘Þurid’ 27.21, ‘Þuridur’ 27.30
(both nom.). Though rr after a stressed vowel has evidently been simplified
(see above), the old distinction between -r and -rr is observed to some
degree in the inflection of the name Styrr, written ‘Styrr’ 26.28, 29, 30, 41,
81 (all nom.). The accusative is ‘Styr’ 26.34 (sole). Other occurrences are
indeterminate. The name occurs 26.24 - 99, in the nominative, both with
<rr> (abbreviated) (x 5) and <r> (x 10); when abbreviated by suspension it
has been expanded in accordance with the majority of the full spellings.
Clearly <rr) and <r> are not distinctive spellings in this word.
