scribal error.

5. ERRORS AND UNIQUE READINGS
There are a number of commonplace copyists’ slips and also some
omissions, which are mentioned in the Notes. In addition, however, there
are certain errors that distinguish the text of W. The chief of these, which
are of importance in calculating the relationship of W to other MSS, are
discussed in the General introduction, pp. 7*-10*. Others include the
readings listed below.
25.23 ‘brunsteininuw’ (before correction) should almost certainly have
been ‘brusteininum’ (‘brusteinar’ H), see textua note.
30.17 ‘Þordisar dal’ (omitted here by H) is taken by Guðbrandur Vig-
fússon and Einar Ol. Sveinsson to be a copying mistake for Þórsárdal. The
scribe had trouble with this place-name. At 31.62 ‘þordisar' has been struck
out (before ‘dal’) and there is an incompletely visible correction in the
margin, perhaps ‘þ’ (H: ‘vppi dalin/í’); the dale is called ‘Þiorsáár dal’
31.41 (H: ‘þiorz ar dal’), ‘Þorsáár dal’ 31.73 (H: ‘þiorsar dal’), ‘þor(s)
aar"dal’ 31.86 (H: ‘þiorzardal’). Z, 447, and *A all read ‘Þors-’; no G.
36.4 ‘sendi maðr Styrs’ for ‘sendi maðr Steinþors’ (incorrect expansion
at some stage of transmission?). This clearly erroneous reading is shared by
H, which, like W, reverts to Steinþor- in later readings; no G.
38.33 ‘Þwbcrgr’ for ‘Bergþorr’ (shared with M; subsequent instances in
W are correct, though M repeats the error several times). H correctly reads
‘bergþorr' (commonsense?).
The heading to chapter 43 is incorrect, since the subject matter refers to
Snorri Þorbrandsson, not Snorri goði. (H is here absent.)
At 43.5-6 W reads ‘S(norri) Þo/ brandz s(on)’ along with H and Ak (prob-
ably correctly), whereas Aa, Aj and Z here read ‘Þorbrandur son Sn(orra)’.
(447 49.6 reads ‘Þorbrandz son Snorre’, no doubt by correction.)
At 49.11 ‘Guðlaugr’ should have been ‘Guðleifr’.
Amongst other errors are ‘hafði’ 46.3, surely for less familiar ‘haði’,
‘mikil’ 50.36, surely for ‘ekki mikil’ (as M; ‘ecki stor’ Z (c/447 64.37),
