minnzt(i). With one exception, ‘aka/fvztv’ 45.52, this classical rule is
followed in E, e g ‘likligast’ 41.71, ‘eRÍligsta’ 41.49, ‘næst’ 41.1 (x 12),
‘minzt’ 45.43, ‘bezta’ 46.21.
The form ‘aka/fvztv’ in E is an early example of the falling together of
-st- and -zt- in word-medial position in the superlative. Fem. and neut.
superlative forms ending in (z) (presumably representing st) are found in
manuscripts since the second quarter of the thirteenth century (c/ Kjartan
G. Ottósson 1992, p. 108), and in the following period the use of <z> spread
to the word-medial position before t as well.
Verbal forms The ending -ir for first person sing. pres. indic. appears
only in ‘ek hef/>’ 45.17, where W and M have the same form.9
The medio-passive ending is universally ‘-z’.
The form ‘man’ (pres sing. of munu) occurs 41.95, 45.17.
The third plur. past indic. of vera (earlier vQru) is transcribed, when
expanded, as ‘voro’; it is written ‘v°’ thirteen times, plus one case which is
not clear, 45.8.
4. INDIVIDUAL WORD FORMS
‘alldregi’ 41.68 (aldri-gi).
‘bvanda’ 46.13, alongside ‘bendr’ 45.75, ‘böndr’ 45.3, ‘bðndvm’ 45.74.
‘feignir' 41.114 (fengnir): falling together of gn and ngn.10
The noun hey retains its wa-stem declension in ‘hæyfi’ 41.42, ‘heyfino’
41.57,68,69.
‘gegz’ 41.111 (gekksk): falling together of ks and gs.
n0kkurr: in the disyllabic forms, with no u in the second syllable, the
first vowel is unmutated ‘nackvars’ 41.71, ‘nackvat’ 47.5, but in the
trisyllabic forms the first vowel is o-type ‘nöckvra’ 41.19, ‘nockvra’ 45.20.
vel appears as ‘val’ 41.22, 27, 41.113 (all), once uncertain 45.52, never
clearly as ‘vel’.
Þuríðr: forms of the nominative: ‘Þvriðr’ 41.91, 102, 110, 112, ‘Þvrriðr’
41.21, ‘Þvriþr’ 41.22, 37, ‘Þvri[þ]r’ 41.23 (the nom. form does not occur
without final (r»; the genitive at 41.30 is incomplete. The dative occurs as
‘Þyriði’ 41.16. The other instance of the dative of this name appears to be
‘Þ[o]riði’ 41.39, though the second letter is not certain.* 11
