text of the saga up to the point where f. 1 begins, are three unnumbered
leaves. The top margin of the first reads “Hæc D(omi)n(us) Arnas Mag-
næus Codicem nostrum [Ms Hafnia] remittens 1701”. Against this is
written in another hand “(manus Leibnitii)”.17 There follows in Árni’s
hand:
Hoc Codice Islandico continentur:
1. Eyrbyggja Saga, id est Eyrensium historia. (Eyri prædium est occi-
dentalis Islandiæ, in territorio Scogarstrond, unde Eyrenses isti
2. Egils Saga, id est Egilli vita: Egillus iste natione Islandus erat,
Scallagrimi filius, insignis bellator; cujus præclara j facinora, qvæ in
Daniá, Norvegiá, Angliá, Frisiá, Curlandiá, Islandiá, magno numero
peregit, prolixé hic recensentur. Vixit is seculo decimo, obiitque
admodum senex.18 Ex hoc opere vetus historia Septentrionis, ut et
Anglica, multum illustrari possunt.
The second leaf'9 is blank on the recto. The verso, in Árni’s hand, reads:
Heic ab initio multa desunt, qvæ ex alio Codice exscripta impræsen-
tiarum transmittuntur.
There follows, in a different hand (presumably that of an official at the
Bibliothéque Nationale):
Hoc supplementum non missuní est Guelpherbyto. Parisiis VIII Kal.
Majis 1807. H.
The third leaf reads on the recto:
Dieses gehört zu dem alten Jis lándischen buche aus der Wolffen
biittelischen Bibliothec, und ist der anfang der ersten dar-in begrif-
fenen historie.
171 e the philosopher G. W. Leibniz (d. 1716), who was chief librarian to the Duke of Brunswick-
A'olfenbiittel.
About a line of writing is here struck out.
In Man Isl III, the facsimiles of the verso of Ámi’s second leaf and the recto of the third leaf
were inadvertently placed in reverse order; cf p. xiv, 11. 1-2.
