ingly similar and - whether or not this is the hand of Jón kollur himself -
they may well be identical. In the facsimile edition of Kollsbók, Ólafur
Halldórsson gives a fairly detailed description of the orthography of the
hands found in this manuscript, and in my description of the orthography of
AM 309 4to account has been taken of his description of Kollsbók's hand

3. Copies of G
Five manuscripts are known to be descended from G. British Library Add.
11110 is explicitly stated to be a copy of AM 309 4to. This copy was sold to
the British Museum by Finnur Magnússon in July 1837. An entry, on what
was originally f. 199r, which has been renumbered 34, reads:
Eyrbyggia sögu Fragmentum Ex fasciculo Membranaceo bibliothecæ
Magnæanæ N° 309 in 4to; Egregio sane exemplari cum chartaceis
comparetur. Scripsit, et variantes lectiones ex Codice chartaceo ejus-
dem bibliof h'ecæ N° 158 in Folio, cui Titulus Austfirdinga sogur, at
in collatione designatur per A. item pauculas uti scribenti succurre-
bant notas addidit
Gudmundur Magnæus
This copy of Eyrbyggja occupies ff. 200r-263v, which have been renum-
bered pp. 1-128. AM 158 fol., which is referred to in the colophon above, is
a paper manuscript descended from AM 446 4to (see chapter III, pp. 49*-
50*). A few variant readings are indeed given from it, with the prefix ‘A’; it
is probable, however, that the readings of AM 158 fol. sometimes influ-
enced Guðmundur in his interpretation of G. His readings are occasionally
utilized in the textual notes to G, but in fact Add. 11110 contributes little to
the reading of G; in ca 1837 the manuscript must have been in much the
same state it is today.
Evidence of an older copying comes from four other paper manuscripts:
AM 123 fol., AM 124 fol., AM 125 fol. and Kall 242 fol. Of these, Kall 242
fol., containing Laxdœla saga and Eyrbyggja saga, is explicitly stated to
have been copied from AM 124 fol.; however, the copyist claimed to have
rendered more accurately what in AM 124 fol. was written “valde incurio-
se”.
