OPTRYKKET I G UDBRANDS BI BLlA (N)
impendit.« Halldor Hermannsson loc. cit. s. 32 har her villet se en uover-
ensstemmelse. Dette behøver dog ingenlunde at være tilfældet. GuSbrand-
strationer til ialt 29 træsnit og fortsætter: »The woodcuts which on the
whole are somewhat crude, are all unsigned except that representing
St. Paul, which has a signature supposed to be Bp. Guåbrandur’s
monogram (G.T. - the second letter lengthened so as to form a cross,
see reproduction p. 31). In some copies the illustrations are colored,
evidently by hånd. All the illustrations are of German origin, and in
design are somewhat similar to those in the Danish Bible of 1550, but as
a rule are smaller; the five illustrations in the New Testament are of the
same design, but represent a different cut; where the woodcuts were
made is uncertain, since with the exception of one, they lack signatures
or monograms. As to the illustrations the bishop says in the preface
(hermed menes efterskriften: Til Lesarans/ bibelens sidste bl.): 'Giarna
villda eg hafa laated med {iryckia allar bær Figurur/ sem Historiunne
Heilagrar Bibliu til heyra/ Enn eg hef ecke kunnad bær ad faa’. By 'all
the figures’ he probably means those to be found in Luther’s Bible. It
is the general opinion that the woodcuts, the ornaments, and some of
the initials were designed and cut by the bishop and Grimur Eiriksson
of Vi5vik. That Bp. Guåbrandur was a very skilful artisan is well known,
