Public Health in Iceland 1945. — A Summary.
1. In 1945 the climatic conditions were rather favourable, in March
even exceptionally so. The mean temperature of the air was a little
more than 2% above the average. The rainfall was about 10% above
the average. During the summer months til sunshine in Reykjavik
was of 166 hours shorter but in Akureyri of 61 hours longer duration
than usually. Business and trade conditions were favourable. Un-
employment was unknown, but prices continued to be alarmingly
high.
2. Population, Births and Deaths. The population was on December
íílst 1945: 130356 including Reykjavik 46578 (1944: 127791 and
44281). The marriage rate was 8,0 (7,8) the birth rate 26,6 (25,4)
and the death rate 9,1 (9,6) per 1000 inhabitants. lnfant mortality
was 34,4 (38,9) per 1000 born alive. The death rate of the year is the
lowest on record, 9,6 being the lowest registered before (last jrear). The
lowest infant mortality figure recorded is 28,3%0 (1938).

4. Epidemic Diseases. The incidence of epidemic diseases in 1945
is shown in tables II, III and IV, 1—27.
The following table shows the incidence of epidemic diseases in
1936—1945 as also the aggregate number of deaths from each disease
during the same period.
