Public Health in Iceland 1942. — A Summary.
1. In 1942 ihe climatic condition.s were on the whole rather un-
favourable and unstable. The atmospheric pressnre in the whole
country was 0,5 mm above the average. The mean temperature of the
air was 1,5° above the average. The rainfall was 12% above the
average. During the suinmer months the snnshinc in Reykjavik and
especially in Akureyri (on the north coast) was of somewhat shorter
duration than usually. Business and trade conditions were favourable.
Unemployment was unknown, but prices went still higher and higher.
2. Population, births and deaths. The population was on December
:ilst 1942: 123996 including Reykjavik 40902 (1941: 122385 and
39739. The marriage rate was 8,7 (8,4), the birth rate 24,5 (21,7) and
the death rate 10,5 (11,1) per 1000 inhabitants. Infant mortaliti/ was
51,6 (32,5) per 1000 born alive. The towTest death rate on record is
9,7%c (1939). The lowest infant mortality figure recorded is 28,3%0
(1938).
