ansi margt. Til að útskýra þessar samræður og það sem gæti virst vera frekar
óvenjulegt kompaní er gott að sækja til kenningarinnar um samræðusjálf (e.
Dialogical Self Theory).
Algeng skilgreining á sjálfinu felur í sér að það sé einhver ákveðinn kjarni
innra með manneskjunni og/eða eitthvað sem gerist í huga hennar. Sam
ræður eru aftur á móti iðulega tengdar við það sem gerist hið ytra eða ferli
sem á sér stað á milli manna sem eiga í samskiptum. Kenningin um sjálfið
sem samræðu eða samræðusjálfið sameinar þetta tvennt.22 Það var sálfræð
ingurinn Hubert Hermanns sem fyrstur setti fram kenninguna um sam
ræðu sjálfið en hann byggði hana meðal annars á verkum Williams James,
Jeromes Bruners og Mikhails Bakhtin.23 Málið snýst í meginatriðum um
tvenns konar hugsunarmáta; frásagnarhugsun og staðhæfingahugsun (þar
sem staðhæfingin er annað hvort rétt eða röng), svo og hugmyndir Bakhtíns
um fjölradda skáldskap. Síðasta aldarfjórðunginn eða svo hefur kenningin
verið þróuð enn frekar meðal annars með hliðsjón af kenningum George
Herberts Mead og Friedrichs nietzshe.24
Með samræðusjálfi er ekki átt við samræður einstaklings við annan ein
stakling heldur samræður innan sjálfsins. Sjálfið er með öðrum orðum skil
greint sem margar virkar ég–stöður innan sama rýmis eða í ímynduðu lands
lagi. Ég–ið getur ferðast frá einni stöðu til annarrar í samræmi við breytingar
á aðstæðum og tíma; en stöðurnar geta verið ólíkar og jafnvel myndað and
stæður. Ég–ið hefur hæfnina til að gæða hverja stöðu rödd svo að grunnur
myndast fyrir samræður á milli staðanna. Raddirnar sem verða til í sjálfinu
og tengsl þeirra á milli minna á samskipti persóna í sögum. Eins og ólíkar
