ams Stokoes árið 1960 að táknmál lýtur málfræðilegum lögmálum rétt eins
og raddmál. Táknmál er ekki safn mynda af orðum eða einhvers konar bend-
ingamál, heldur málfræðilegt kerfi tákna og látbrigða sem raðað er saman á
kerfisbundinn hátt rétt eins og einingum raddmála. Táknmál eru tungumál
og máltaka táknmáls er svipað ferli og máltaka raddmáls hjá heyrandi börn-
um.77 Við eðlilegar aðstæður læra bæði heyrnarlaus börn og heyrandi málið
sem fyrir þeim er haft án þess að þeim sé kennt. Heyrnarlaust barn þarf
táknmál, heyrandi barn þarf raddmál. náttúran sér um framhaldið. Rann-
sóknir á máltöku heyrnarlausra og á táknmálum yfirleitt geta því varpað ljósi
á mannlegt mál, þar á meðal kenninguna um markaldur fyrir máltöku.
Hópur heyrnarskertra sem hafa verið rannsakaðir er stór og fjölbreytt-
ur.78 Misjafnt er hvenær máltakan hófst, hjá sumum snemma í barnæsku,
öðrum við upphaf skólagöngu, á unglings- eða fullorðinsárum. Margar
þessara rannsókna draga þó upp áþekka mynd. Eftir því sem máltakan hefst
síðar sjást þess meiri merki í árangrinum. Heyrnarlausir sem hefja máltöku
í kringum 5–6 ára aldur ná síðri árangri en þeir sem fá málörvun frá upp-
hafi en betri árangri en þeir sem hefja máltökuna einhverjum árum síðar, en
skipting í aldurshópa er aðeins misjöfn eftir rannsóknum. Þessar rannsóknir
sýna glöggt að árangur síðbúinnar máltöku er ekki sambærilegur við eðlilega
máltöku. Aðeins nokkurra ára seinkun máltökunnar hefur varanleg áhrif.
Hins vegar er líka ljóst að þeir sem hefja máltöku ekki fyrr en á unglings-
árum eða síðar geta náð umtalsverðum árangri. Þó að þeir geri margar villur,
sem endurspegla ófullkomið og einfalt kerfi, er eitthvert kerfi fyrir hendi.
Þessi hópur virðist til dæmis ná að tileinka sér grundvallarorðaröð málsins.79
Skýr dæmi eru þó um mjög afdrifaríkar afleiðingar þess að heyrnar-
