JÁKVÆTT STARFSUMHVERF I KENNARA ? AUK IN V INNUGLEÐ I
The article covers a section of a study on the bipolar dimension of burnout/job-en-
gagement among elementary school teachers. It is based upon Leiter and Maslach´s
(2000) theory of organizational health. Their organizational check-up questionnaire
was used to study teachers´ job environment and trace factors that contribute to job-
engagement and prevent burn-out.
The organizational health factors vary in their suitability for predicting burnout/
job-engagement. The teachers report a considerable workload and majority of them
find the specified work time insufficient for their assignments. Their daily preparatory
time ranges from one to seven hours, most commonly 3?4 hours. Half of the respond-
ents are negative towards more rigid working hours. The result of the study implicate
that positive communication, effective rewards, moderate workload and a harmony in
values of the schools as a whole and teachers contribute to good work environment.
