ABSTRACT
The article discusses universities in multicultural societies in an era of globalisation.
Attention is drawn to the accessibility of diverse student groups to universities, the
roles of universities in multicultural societies, as well as the position and experiences
of particular students within universities. In this context the main conclusions of a
qualitative study (from spring 2006) on the position and experiences of students of
foreign origin in the Iceland University of Education are discussed. The conclusions of
the study indicate that although the accessibility of foreign students to the university
appears to be good, certain difficulties are evident when they begin their studies. The
difficulties appear to stem from the fact that the university is in many ways unpre-
pared for a diverse student group. Finally the implications of the study for the deve-
lopment of Icelandic universities during an era of globalisation are discussed, as well
as potential reforms to be made in higher education in the light of societal changes.
