The excerpt under the last entry, Smasmygli, comes not from Guia-
mars Ijod but rather from the prologue to the Strengleikar, of which
the first, to be sure, is Guiamars Ijod. If we are to believe that the
excerpts were taken from Ormsbok, this manuscript must have
contained not only Gvlmars saga, but the prologue as well. The close
agreement of the passages in the Index with De la Gardie 4-7, and
especially the underlinings in this manuscript, strongly suggest, how-
ever, that this was the source of the excerpts. Since Verelius cites both
Ormsbok and Brett. Str. for two of the entries, it is theoretically
possible that he consulted a Gvlmars saga in Ormsbok as well as
Guiamars Ijod in De la Gardie 4-7 for some entries. This is unlikely,
however. If Ormsbok, an Icelandic manuscript from the fourteenth
century, had contained a Gvlmars saga, there is a strong probability
that its text would have differed considerably from that of the
Norwegian manuscript. As it is, every one of the excerpts cited above
can be located in De la Gardie 4-7, and the quotations under Blodlaus
and Byrla, which come from the same passage in Guiamars Ijod,
confirm that Gvlmars saga in one entry (Blodlaus) is identical with
the Strengleikar (Brett. Str.) in another (Byrla).
The references to Gvlmars saga are in faet references to the work
we know as Guiamars Ijod in the Norwegian Strengleikar manuscript.
Since the abbreviation used for the Strengleikar vacillates between
Brett. Str. and Brett. (the latter found with a page reference and in
conjunction with Brett. Str.), the only reasonable explanation that can
be offered here is that in the course of compilation or printing of the
Index, confusion arose between the references to the Strengleikar and
