Abstract
!e Inheritors of Don Quixote
Oe main purpose of this article is to revitalize the theory that the self is con-
stituted by stories. Attempts at refuting the existence of the self usually lead to
logical problems. To be sure, we cannot prove its existence but we have reasons to
believe that there is a grain of truth in the everyday idea that the self exists.
Oe self is a complex phenomenon. One of its aspects is the subject, i.e. the
bearer of experiences. Oe self is also the backbone of personhood, that is, a
person minus the idiosyncratic features of personhood. Oe self has also a social
dimension which can be seen in the way it can be regarded as the meeting point
where several typical human identities (h-identities) overlap. “Being John’s wife”
is one such h-identity, also “the CEO of X”. Oese h-identities can overlap in the
sense of the same individual having both.
Some phenomenon have a storied structure, that is, if they essentially unfold
in time, have a beginning, middle and ending, besides being meaningful. Oey
can exist without being told by a storyteller; a daydream is an example of a phe-
