durch alle Teile der Saga. Aus diesen Umstånden sind m. E. keine Be-
weise fur gemeinsame Benutzung einer identischen schriftlichen Quelle
zu gewinnen. Selbst wenn man Th. und Agr. durchaus Selbståndigkeit
der Auffassung zubilligt, bleiben stoffliche Abweichungen ubrig, die sich
gegenseitig ausschlieBen: Regierungsjahre der Jarle, Sudreyjar, Olafs Ver-
haltnis zu Knut in England, der Anmarsch nach Stiklestad und der
Verlauf der Schlacht (entweder failt Bjorn vor oder nach dem Konig).
Dies veranlaBt mich, wiederum an eine Quelle fur beide Denkmåler zu
denken, die sich in Varianten vorgefunden hat, und die damit dem Wesen
nach der miindlichen Stufe angehort. Man muB bedenken, daB die Diffe-
renzen zwischen Agr. und Th. viel entschiedener und durchgehender
sind als zwischen Agr. und HN bei Olaf Tryggvissohn. Agr. steht damit,
selbståndig eine mimdliche Olafssaga knappen Inhaltes und Darstellung
niederschreibend, als gleichrangiger Zeuge neben Theodricus246.
Noch tiefer in die Entstehungsgeschichte fiihrt die Be-
obachtung stilistischer Verschiedenheiten in der Schilderung von Stikle-
stad bei Th. sowohl zu seinen eigenen fruheren Teilen der Saga Olafs
des Heiligen als auch zu Agr. Dessen Darstellungsbreite in der End-
schlacht stimmt etwa mit dem Stuck ab Knuts Angriff (26) iiberein
(nur ohne Dialog): der Weg nach Stiklestad (31, 1) gleicht in Genauig-
keit dem der Flucht (26,6), der Aufmarsch der Gegner und Freunde
(31, 2 bis kaps s ak ar und 31, 3—4) dem Abschnitt iiber Knut und An-
hanger (26, 1—2, 5), die Schlacht selbst ungefiihr der gegen Erling,
(26,3—4 u. 31,5—8), nur eben ohne Reden. Dazu kommt noch die
Begriindung des Aufstandes (31,2). Also die gleiche Breite des Sach-
berichtes, der sich an der Entscheidung zum szenischen, geschauten Bild
aufwolbt. Anders ist es bei der Darstellung des Th.; sie zeigt groBere
Ausfuhrlichkeit auch gegeniiber den eigenen fruheren Partien. Worin

son S. 16 f.), ware es ja, daB die Benutzung von HNs Vorlage (vvie sie ASalbjar-
narson annimmt), gerade da aufhort, wo die Hs. der HN abbricht. Das tvåre nur
verstehbar, wenn das Agr. die HN selbst benutzt und diese schon hier geendet hatte.
Letzteres ist nicht erweisbar und direkte Benutzung der HN selbst nehmen ASal-
bjarnarson und seine Vorgånger nicht an.
